Introduction

You are part of a research team and your group's mission is to find and document information regarding Charles Lindbergh and his flight over the Atlantic Ocean.  Your research will become a vital part of a television documentary on the history of aviation on the Discovery Channel.  Your teacher has divided you into groups and you have been assigned a category relating to Charles Lindbergh  which you will investigate.  The categories the groups will be researching are:  Charles Lindbergh's Life, Details of the Spirit of Saint Louis (airplane), and Details of the Flight.  Remember to conduct your research thoroughly; your information will be used on a television program!

The Task

You have been asked by the Discovery Channel to conduct research on Charles Lindbergh.  To do this, you will be using the Internet.  Below, you have been provided with websites to begin your search with.  Using the Think Sheet your teacher has given  to each group (or you may print it out), find information that pertains to your particular category.  The information your group gathers will need to be organized into a summary.  Each group must present their summary to the rest of the class.

Resources

The following are links to websites that you may click on to start your quest for information on Charles Lindbergh.  You may also follow links from these sites to continue your search for information concerning Charles Lindbergh.

Aviation Relived: http://www.ccnet.com/~peggysue/lindbergh.html

 Micro Wings:  http://www.microwings.com/mw_lindy.html

 The Knowledge Adventure Encyclopedia:  http://www.letsfindout.com/

 ALLSTAR Network:  http://www.allstar.fiu.edu/aerojava/lindbergh2.htm

 The Charles Lindbergh Story:  http://tommy.jssc.nasa.gov/~woodfill/SPACEED/SEHHTML/Lind7.html

The Process

  1. First you will be assigned to a research team by your teacher.
  2. In your group assign someone to work at the keyboard and the rest of you gather around the workstation.
  3. Begin by clicking on one of the websites that are provided on this page.
  4. Search the websites for information that is relevant to your research topic.  Use the Think Sheet as a guide to help you.
  5. Take notes on your topic that you think people would find interesting in a television program on Charles Lindbergh.  Remember to stick to your research topic only.
  6. Once you are finished gathering information, begin to organize your notes into a summary that the Discovery Channel executives can incorporate into their program.  You will also be presenting these summaries to your classmates.

Evaluation

Your team will be graded on the finished summary and presentation.  There will not be an individual grade, each person will receive the grade the group gets.  A good summary should be thorough and cohesive, reflecting information revolving ONLY around the topic given to you.  The presentation should also reflect the summary and show each group member's participation and understanding of Charles Lindbergh.  The presentation will also be graded on creativity and interest level.  Visual aids will also help your presentation.

Conclusion

You have now learned information about the flight as a result of this research and information presented during the oral presentations.  You should now understand the history and struggle leading up to modern day aviation, realizing that flight did not used to be as simple as it is today.  You have also learned to investigate topics of interest through searches done on the Internet.  After completing this activity, what do you think would be a comparable feat in today's society?
